The Forest of Death and Souls

Young Ji’s eyes pried open, blinking lightly from the rays of sunlight that shone through the thickness of the heavy greenery. His eyes widened, and he sat up as he saw a bird, bigger than a human, swoop across the tall tree’s leaves. Its wings were thin and leathery, interdependent between elongated talons. He knew where he was. This was the only place void of all human life... or so he’d thought until Shala came around. He breathed heavily as the creature passed by, sparing an uncaring glance as it went about its business. Once it was out of Young Ji’s sight, he looked around frigidly. He arose when he saw Shala sitting on the ground, putting out what looked like a fire. She was holding a shaven stick, and on it was the charred body of a rabbit. She broke off a piece of its meat and held it out to him. Seeing her indifference was maddening, and he slapped the meat out of her outstretched hand.

“Do you know what you have just done? We needed to stay and explain ourselves. Now Chausiku is going to declare war on us! What happened to our other guards?”

“We barely escaped the palace. What makes you think I had time to gather your guards outside of it?”

“Shala,” Young Ji held a warning in his tone.

She stood up and scoffed, “Seo Young Ji. You have a rat in your kingdom. Someone ordered one of the guards... both even, because it looks like you killed the other one...” Young Ji looked away with a trembling breath. She suspected it must’ve been hard for him to take his own soldiers’ life... or a life at all, knowing Young Ji. “Someone... is trying to remove allyship. They want me to be the issue.”

“I can’t name anyone who would—”

“I can name a few,” she quickly responded. “No matter how you explain yourself, they are going to see you as an enemy.” He was silent. She peeled another piece of meat from the rabbit and handed it to him. “Eat. We have a couple of miles to go before we get back to Seok. You need an appetite other than my body. You’re too light to carry.”

Young Ji grabbed the piece from her. “Why are we in the forest of death?”

“We couldn’t go around like we did before. Their guards would look that way. However, if we went straight ahead into the forest, we could go through the middle of it and then straight down to Seok’s front gate.” Young Ji stuck the piece of wild hare into his mouth, surprised by the taste.

As Shala started walking forward, Young Ji followed her. “What were you nervous about before?” He eyed her as she tried ripping her dress to give her legs leeway to move better. He could tell she did not want to answer, so he asked again. “What did that maid tell you when you left me to talk with the king?”

“Nothing.”

“It wasn’t nothing.
